WIXOSS: Beginner Guide

Selector Infected: WIXOSS
- Beginner Guide
[As of 21st August 2014]

WIXOSS is a trading card game published by Takara Tomy, based on the selector infected WIXOSS anime series.

(i) Setup
To begin the game:
- Search your LRIG Deck for a level 0 LRIG card and put it face-down in front of you.
- Decide who goes first.
- Draw 5 cards. At this point, you may return any number of cards in your hand to your deck, shuffle your deck, and draw the same amount. You may only do this once.
- Put the top 7 cards of your deck into your Life Cloth, face-down.
- Both players flip their level 0 LRIG face-up.

(ii) Phases
1: Up Phase
- All of the turn player's downed LRIG and SIGNI are upped (straightened up), unless prevented from doing so by Freeze effects.

2: Draw Phase
- The turn player draws 2 cards.
- On the first turn of the player going first, that player draws 1 card instead.

3: Ener Phase
- The turn player can move a card in their hand OR one of their SIGNI in play to the Ener Zone. These actions are not mandatory, and may be skipped.

4: Grow Phase
- The turn player may pay the Grow cost of a LRIG card in their LRIG deck. If they do, that player puts that LRIG card on top of their current LRIG. Players can only grow a LRIG by one level each turn. It is possible to grow a LRIG to one of an equal or lower level.
- Like the Ener Phase, growing your LRIG is not mandatory, and may be skipped.

5: Main Phase
- The turn player may do these actions any number of times:
- Play SIGNI. Players cannot play SIGNI of a higher level than their LRIG, and the total level of their SIGNI cannot exceed the LRIG's limit.
- Play ARTS and spells by paying their costs.
- Move their own SIGNI on the field to the trash.

6: Attack Phase
Attack [Read (iii) Attack]
- If it is the first turn of the entire game, the turn player skips this phase.
- The attack phase consists of three consecutive steps, none of which are mandatory.

7: ARTS Use Step
- The turn player may use any number of ARTS that can be used during the attack phase. Then, the other player may use ARTS.

8: SIGNI Attack Step
- The turn player may attack with their SIGNI.

9: LRIG Attack Step
- The turn player may attack with their LRIG.

10: End Phase
- If the turn player has 7 or more cards in their hand, they discard until they only have 6.

(iii) Attack
- Attacking is the action taken by LRIG and SIGNI against the enemy LRIG. Attacking is done during the Attack Phase of one's turn. Attacking with SIGNI is always done before attacking with your LRIG. To attack with a SIGNI or LRIG, Down it. A Downed SIGNI or LRIG cannot attack until returned Up by an effect.
- Before any SIGNI or LRIG attacks, either player may choose to use ARTS with "Use Timing [Attack Phase]." The turn player chooses which ARTS they want to use before their opponent does. Either player can use as many ARTS as they want to.
- If a SIGNI is attacking, and the opponent has a SIGNI in the same column as the attacking SIGNI, those two SIGNI battle. If the attacking SIGNI's power is equal to or higher than the defending SIGNI, the defending SIGNI is banished; otherwise, both SIGNI stay on the field. If the opponent doesn't have a SIGNI in the same column, one of their Life Cloth is crushed; it is moved to the Check Zone, any Life Burst effects the card has is triggered, and then it is sent to the Ener Zone.
- If a LRIG is attacking, your opponent may use a Guard by discarding a card with the Guard effect; otherwise the attack hits, and one of your opponent's Life Cloth is crushed. When a LRIG attacks, it doesn't matter if the opposing player has SIGNI on the field.
- If an attack by a SIGNI or LRIG is not prevented and the opponent has no Life Cloth remaining, you win the game.
Note: For the purpose of effects such as Seiryu, Phantom Beast, attacking is independent of SIGNI battles. Effects triggering when something attacks triggers immediately as the SIGNI or LRIG is downed.

(iv) LRIG Deck
- The LRIG Deck contains a player's unused LRIG and ARTS, the white-backed cards. Unlike the normal deck, the LRIG deck is not drawn from; instead, its contents can be searched at will. Growing LRIGs involves putting a LRIG from the LRIG deck onto your current LRIG. ARTS can be used at any time as long as the cost is paid and the use timing is correct.

Deck Construction
- In WIXOSS, all LRIG decks must follow these rules:
= All LRIG decks can have up to 10 cards (LRIG and ARTS).
= All LRIG decks must have a level 0 LRIG.
= LRIG Decks cannot have more than 4 copies of a particular card.

(v) LRIG
LRIGs (ルリグ) are one of the card types in WIXOSS. They are avatars of the decks of WIXOSS players.

In the anime, special live LRIGs used by Selectors in Selector battles to become an Eternal Girl. These special LRIGs are sentient and often instruct their Selectors in battles.

Within the TCG, they represent the player, such that the player takes damage when their LRIG is hit. LRIGs go in the LRIG Deck. When LRIGs grow, the new LRIG card is placed on top of the old LRIG card and is not sent to the LRIG Trash.

Parts of a LRIG Card:
1: Color
- Located in the top-right corner.
- Determines the associated color of the LRIG.

2: Level
- Located in the top-left corner.
- The level of a LRIG determines the maximum level of SIGNI that can be played, as players cannot play SIGNI whose level is higher than the current LRIG. LRIGs can grow, proceeding to a higher level, lowering to another level, or even growing into the same level.
- Player LRIG Decks must contain at least one level 0 LRIG.
- Both players start the game with a level 0 LRIG.

3: Limit
- Located in the top-left corner under the level.
- The limit of a LRIG determines the total level of SIGNI that a player can have on the field at a time. The total level of SIGNI in play cannot exceed the LRIG's limit.

4: Grow Cost
- Located in the bottom-left corner.
- Determines the color and amount of Ener that must be paid in order to grow into the LRIG during the Grow Phase.

5: LRIG Type
- Located to the center-right.
- The LRIG type determines what LRIG cards a LRIG can grow into, as well as the kinds of SIGNI, spells, or ARTS that can be used.
- A LRIG cannot grow into a LRIG of a different LRIG type.
- A player cannot summon SIGNIs or activate spells or ARTS that are restricted to a LRIG type that is not their active LRIG.
- However, Life Bursts are not limited by LRIG types. Therefore, it is possible to activate a Life Burst regardless if the SIGNI or spell can be played or not due to the LRIG type.

6: Effect
- If present, will be shown in the textbox of the card.
- Like SIGNI, a LRIG may have effects, and their use is similar.

(vi) Hand
- The hand contains a player's unused SIGNI and spells. At the beginning of the game, each player draws 5 cards from their Deck, putting those cards into their respective hands. At this point, players may choose, only once, to return cards from their hand to their deck, shuffle their deck, and draw the same number of cards they returned.
- At the end of a player's turn, if that player has 7 or more cards in their hand, they must discard cards until they only have 6 cards remaining.

1: Draw
- Drawing a card is to take a card from the top of your deck and put it into your hand. This action is traditionally done during the Draw Phase, but some card effects allow a player to draw additional cards outside of the Draw Phase.
- On the very first turn of the game, the first player draws only 1 card from their deck into their hand. From then on, every turn both players draw 2 cards during their respective Draw Phase.

Decking Out
- Deck [Read (vii) Deck]

2: Discard
- To discard a card is to take that card from your hand and put it into your trash. Several effects can cause a player to discard cards: Many blue cards cause the opponent to discard, and many cards require you to discard as part of the costs for their effects.

(vii) Deck
- The deck is the gameplay zone where SIGNI and spells, the black-backed cards, are drawn from.

1: Deck Construction
- In WIXOSS, all decks must follow these rules:
= All decks must have exactly 40 cards.
= All decks must have exactly 20 Life Burst cards.
= Decks cannot have more than 4 copies of a particular card.

- In addition, there are extra rules for the LRIG Deck:
= All LRIG decks can have up to 10 cards (LRIG and ARTS).
= All LRIG decks must have a level 0 LRIG.
= LRIG Decks cannot have more than 4 copies of a particular card.

2: In-Game
- At the beginning of the game, each player shuffles their deck, draws 5 cards from the top of their deck, and may return some of the drawn cards to the deck and redraw (see Setup). Then, each player puts the top 7 cards of their deck face-down as Life Cloth. During the first turn of the player going first, that player draws 1 card during their draw phase; after the first turn, players draw 2 cards during their draw phase.
- During the game, unless a card allows you to search your deck, players cannot look at the contents of decks or change the order of the cards in them.

Running Out of Cards
- Refresh [Red (viii) Refresh]
- If a player runs out of cards in their main deck, they do not immediately lose the game. Instead, they shuffle all the cards in the trash into their deck, then put one of their Life Cloth into the trash.

(viii) Refresh
- Refreshing is the action taken immediately when a player's deck has run out of cards.
- Refresh is done immediately when a player's deck has run out of cards, regardless if it is during the Draw Phase, an effect, or the opponent's turn. When a player's deck has run out of cards, all previous actions are stopped and the player shuffles his trash, then replaces it as the new Deck. Then that player moves 1 of their Life Cloth, if any, to their trash.
- If a player runs out of cards in their deck and they have no cards in their trash, the game continues without the player refreshing. The player does not lose the game. They refresh the moment a card is put into their trash.
- Whenever the turn player refreshes for the second time in one turn, their turn ends immediately. This does not apply to the non-turn player.

(ix) Life Cloth
- Life Cloths are a set of face-down cards placed between the players and the rest of the table. These represent the player's remaining lives, in which the objective of the game is to eliminate all Life Cloths before striking a final blow.
- At the start of the game, after drawing 5 cards, each player places the top 7 cards of their deck in front of them sideways, face-down as Life Cloths.
- Life Cloth can be lost by crushes, card effects, or running out of cards to draw from the deck.

1: Crush
- Crushing is the act of removing Life Cloths. It is the primary method of dealing damage to the opposing player and winning. Whenever a SIGNI attacks and there is no SIGNI in front of that SIGNI, or when a LRIG attacks and the attack is not guarded, the attacking player crushes a Life Cloth. Life Cloth can also be crushed through certain card effects, such as the effect of Fissure of Condemnation.
- When a card is added to Life Cloth, it goes to the top of the Life Cloth. When a Life Cloth would be crushed, the top card of the Life Cloth is crushed. Players cannot choose which Life Cloth to crush.
- When a player's Life Cloth is crushed, the crushed Life Cloth goes to the Check Zone, where it is checked for a Life Burst effect. If one exists, the player may activate their Life Burst effect. The card then goes to the Ener Zone.
- If a LRIG or SIGNI attacks a player with no Life Cloth directly, the attacking player wins the game. Effects that directly crush a Life Cloth have no effect on players with no Life Cloth; that player does not automatically lose the game.

2: Decking Out
- Refresh [Read (viii) Refresh]
- When a player has run out of cards to draw from their deck, one of their Life Cloth is sent to the Trash.
- Life Cloths lost by running out of cards to draw from the deck are not considered crushed and do not go to the Ener Zone.

(x) Down
- Down is one of the states a LRIG or SIGNI can be in when on the field. When a LRIG or SIGNI is downed, it is turned sideways. When a LRIG or SIGNI is downed, it cannot be downed again until it is returned Up first.
- LRIGs and SIGNIs become downed whenever they attack. Some LRIGs and SIGNI have costs that require them to be downed, such as Mandore, Natural Plant, and certain card effects can also cause SIGNI to be downed, such as the effect of Don't Move. Cards that are downed before they attack cannot attack.

(xi) SIGNI
SIGNI (シグニ) is one of card types in the WIXOSS. They are summoned spirits that support their LRIG by attacking the opposing LRIG and their SIGNIs or using effects.

According to card lore, SIGNIs are the representative manifestation of the LRIG's experiences.

During the Up Phase, all currently downed SIGNI are moved to up, unless frozen.

During the Ener Phase, aside from sending a card from hand to the Ener Zone, players may also move 1 SIGNI from their field to the Ener Zone instead.

During the Main Phase, SIGNIs may be summoned into one of three unoccupied SIGNI Zone or moved from the SIGNI Zone to the Trash, as many times as the turn player wants. SIGNI Action effects may also be activated during this phase.

During the Attack Phase, SIGNIs may attack by downing themselves. Downed SIGNI cannot attack. SIGNIs attack before the LRIG and cannot attack after the LRIG attacks. When attacking, SIGNIs must attack the opposing SIGNI in front of them. If there is an opposing SIGNI, the result of the battle between the two SIGNI are determined by their Power. If there is no opposing SIGNI, the attack crushes one of the opponent's Life Cloth, this cannot be Guarded. If there are no Life Cloth when attacking to crush, the attacking player wins.

Parts of a SIGNI:
1: Color
- Located in the top-right corner.
- Determines the color of the SIGNI card.
- Determines what color of Ener is given when in the Ener Zone.

2: Level
- Located in the top-left corner.
- SIGNI of a higher level than the player's currently active LRIG cannot be summoned. Otherwise, SIGNI of equal or lower level than the player's currently active LRIG can be summoned.
- The total-sum level of all summoned SIGNI cannot be higher than the limit of the player's currently active LRIG.

3: Power
- Located in the bottom-left corner.
- Determines the battle result between two opposing SIGNI.
- If the attacking SIGNI's Power is equal to or higher than the defending SIGNI's Power, the defending SIGNI is banished.
- If the attacking SIGNI's Power is less than the defending SIGNI's Power, nothing happens.
- Has no effect on Life Cloth when crushing.
- When SIGNI's Power reaches 0 or less, it is banished.

4: Class
- Located in the center-right.
- Divides SIGNIs into separate classifications. They are not mutually exclusive of each other, and you can have multiple SIGNI classes in a deck.
- SIGNIs in same classes often have similar styles of effects, as well as having effects that benefits other SIGNIs of the same class.

5: Limiting Condition
- Located in the center-left.
- Like ARTS and spells, some SIGNIs are restricted and only usable by certain LRIG Types.
- However, Life Bursts are still able to be activated despite different LRIG Types/Restrictions.

6: Effect
- If present, will be shown in the textbox of the card.
- Like LRIG, SIGNI may have effects, and their use is similar.

7: Life Burst
- If present, will be located along the bottom of the textbox, below the effect if present.
- Its effect can only be activated when crushed from the Life Cloth, not when banished.

(xii) Up
- Up is one of the states a LRIG or SIGNI can be in when on the field. LRIG and SIGNI are played up until they are downed, either by attacking, effects, or for a cost.
- During a player's Up Phase, the player's downed LRIG and their downed SIGNIs are all returned Up, unless frozen. Certain effects can also up your LRIG and SIGNI.
- Being upped allows a LRIG or SIGNI to attack or use effects which require being downed as a cost.

(xiii) Freeze
- Freeze (凍結) is a mechanic that primarily appears on blue cards. It first appeared in WX-01 Served Selector. Freeze is an action that affects SIGNI, preventing them from upping during their owner's up phase.
- The current reminder text for Freeze is: It doesn't up during the next up phase
- If a frozen SIGNI is upped, it can still attack and use [Down] abilities as normal.
- For the purposes of cards that banish frozen SIGNI, such as ICE BREAK, a SIGNI is considered to be frozen until the up phase in which it doesn't up.

(xiv) Ener Zone
- The Ener Zone is the zone to the left of all of the other zones. The cards in it are used to pay costs; to pay a cost, put the requisite type and number of cards from the Ener Zone into the trash.
- During the Ener Phase of your turn, after upping all of your cards and drawing your cards, you may put a card in your hand OR one of your SIGNI on the field to the Ener Zone. SIGNI go to the Ener Zone after being banished, and Life Cloth are put into the Ener Zone from the Check Zone after being crushed.

(xv) Grow
Growing is the act of putting a LRIG card from your LRIG Deck into your LRIG Zone on top of your current LRIG. All LRIG cards have a grow cost, which is the cost required to put that card on your LRIG Zone.
- You may only grow to a LRIG whose level is at most 1 higher than your current LRIG's level.
- You may grow to a LRIG with an equal or lower level than your current one.
- You may not grow a LRIG into another LRIG with a different type: for example, you may not grow Tamayorihime, New Moon Miko into Code Piruluk K.
- You may not grow to a LRIG that is under your current LRIG, as it is not in your LRIG Deck.

These conditions still apply if you grow via an effect, such as the effects of Get Grow and End of Eternity.

(xvi) ARTS
ARTS (アーツ) are one of the card types in WIXOSS. They represent a LRIG's special abilities. ARTS are placed in the LRIG Deck at the start of the game and are used from there.

After all of an ARTS's effects are resolved, it goes to the LRIG Trash.

Parts of an ARTS Card:
1: Color
- Located in the top-right corner.
- Determines the color of the ARTS card.

2: Cost
- Located in the top-left corner.
- Like spells, all ARTS have a cost that must be paid before they can be used.

3: Limiting Condition
- Located in the center-left.
- Like SIGNIs and spells, some ARTS are restricted and only usable by certain LRIG Types.
- However, restricted ARTS may still be used for the effects of other cards, such as the effect of Kareira, Water Phantom.

4: Use Timing
- Listed above the effects.
- Each ARTS has a special cast condition, called a Use Timing which dictates the time at which a particular ARTS can be used. ARTS can have multiple Use Timing, but can still only be used once.
[Main Phase]: Can be used during your Main Phase.
[Attack Phase]: Can be used during either player's Attack Phase, before any SIGNI attacks. The attacking player uses attack phase ARTS first, and may use as many as they want. Then, the defending player uses attack phase ARTS, as much as they want.
[Spell Cut-In]: Can be used when an opponent's spell is used. You may use multiple Spell Cut-In ARTS on your opponent's spell. (You can't use Spell Cut-Ins in response to your own spell)

5: Effect
- Shown in the textbox of the card.
- Contains the effect of the ARTS.

(xvii) Spell
Spells (スペル) are one of the card types in WIXOSS. They used to support your LRIG. Like SIGNI, spells are placed in the Deck during deck construction. Spells are used from your hand during your Main Phase, and as many spells as you like. All spells have a cost that must be paid to use, and go to the Trash after all of its effects resolve.

Parts of a Spell Card:
1: Color
- Located in the top-right corner.
- Determines the color of the spell card.
- Determines what color of Ener is given when in the Ener Zone.

2: Cost
- Located in the top-left corner.
- Like ARTS, all spells have a cost that must be paid before they can be used.

3: Limiting Condition
- Located in the center-left.
- Like ARTS and SIGNI, some spells are restricted and only usable by certain LRIG Types.
- However, Life Bursts are still able to be activated despite LRIG Types/Restrictions.

4: Effect
- Shown in the textbox of the card.
- Contains the effect of the spell.

5: Life Burst
- If present, will be located along the bottom of the text, below the effect.

(xviii) Cost
- Costs are Ener requirements that must be paid in order to Grow, use ARTS and spells, or activate LRIG and SIGNI abilities.
- To pay a cost, send the specified number of cards from your Ener Zone into your Trash. For example, to use Rococo Boundary, which has a cost of [White] × 3 [Colorless] × 2, put three white cards and two other cards of any color in your Ener Zone into your trash.

(xix) Trash
- The trash is the gameplay zone used to put used-up SIGNI and Spells. Cards enter the trash whenever they have been discarded from your hand or used to pay a cost from the Ener Zone. Spells enter the trash after being used. ARTS do not go to the trash after being used; they go to the LRIG Trash instead.
- Unlike other card games, SIGNI do not enter the trash after being banished; they go to the Ener Zone instead.

- The cards put into the trash are placed face up next to your deck. Under normal circumstances, once a card goes into the trash, it cannot leave; however, certain card effects can retrieve cards from the trash. If a player runs out of cards in their deck, they shuffle all the cards in the trash into their deck, then put one of their Life Cloth into the trash.

(xx) Lancer
- Lancer (ランサー) is a keyword ability that primarily appears on green cards. It first appeared in WXD-04 Green Wanna.

The current reminder text for Lancer is: [Lancer] (When this SIGNI banishes one of your opponent's SIGNI in battle, crush 1 of your opponent's Life Cloth.)

Note:
- Lancer does not stack. If a SIGNI with two instances of Lancer banishes a SIGNI by battle, only one Life Cloth is crushed.
- Lancer does not stack with Double Crush. If a SIGNI with both instances of Lancer and Double Crush banished a SIGNI by battle, only one Life Cloth is crushed.

(xxi) Assassin
Assassin (アサシン) is a keyword ability that primarily appears on red cards. It first appeared in SP-02 spec selector: Hitoe Uemura.

The current reminder text for Assassin is: [Assassin] (If this SIGNI attacks, it deals damage to the opponent as if there was no SIGNI in front of it.)

Assassin does not stack with itself or Lancer. However, it does stack with Double Crush.
